Section of fishing in a mountain stream

There are so many reasons I chose this piece for the third blog.  First I like the idea of the hand scrolls.  It is not just a piece of art but becomes an experience and a story. If you block off sections of this piece and try to look at each section your imagination tells stories of mountains, fishing, and nature.  Another thing I love about this piece is graphic style and line work.  I love the style of this piece and I would hang this up in my house.  Last I love the composition of this piece and its depth and lines. Some one else agrees though, because it has their stamp of approval in the top right corner.

Commodus as Hercules

First I chose this piece because of its amazing detail.  The level of skill to make this must have been up there with the greatest sculptors of the time.  I love the drill work in the hair, it has a very cool texture in it.  Every surface is carved to look like it's so real like the fabrics folds to the softness of skin.  I also chose this piece because I thought it was funny that Commodus thought so highly of himself that he portrayed himself as Hercules.

Ajax and Achilles playing a game

I like this piece a lot for a couple of different reasons.  First I like that it tells a story.  I think its neat how it shows two legendary warriors not in battle, but playing a game of dice.  After reading the article on this piece I noticed that that the numbers they are calling out are written vertically down across from their mouthes.  I think that is clever but kind of funny.  I like the contrast of the colors in this piece.  Also there are some great textures in the painting on this piece.
